Don't Drink The Water- America's Drinking Water Contaminated With Pharmaceuticals

by PCJH Founder/President
Carol Williams

A recent study performed by two members of the Associated Press revealed that there may be more in the nation's drinking water than just chlorine. According to Jeff Donn, Martha Mendoza and Justin Pritchard the US drinking water is contaminated with "an array of pharmaceuticals" including, anti-biotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers, heart medications and sex  hormones.  The March 9, 2008 investigative study showed that the contaminated water supply has the potential to impact on at least 41 million people.  The study was held over five months and discovered drugs in 24 major cities including New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, California, Louisville and many others.

The report says that the nation's utility companies are committed to providing clean water.  They say that the water is safe.  Authorities insist that the quantities of these pharmaceuticals are small "far below the levels of a medical dose" environmentalists and social activists worry that long termed exposure of even tiny amounts can be detrimental.

"What people have to consider that even though the report says that the levels of these pharmaceuticals are below the level of a medical dose, continued exposure to these drugs over a long period of time has to have a negative impact on the human condition.  Consider the fact that a lot of mothers use tap water when mixing their babies formulas.  The babies are ingesting these drugs during a period when their brains and other important internal organs are developing.  If a baby continues to be exposed to a mood altering drug in low doses over a long period of time it has to impact on their behavior once they reach school age.  Perhaps, this is the reason why the nation's youth is going berserk and exposing addictive behavior at younger ages.  Maybe exposure to the sex hormones in water is causing our youngsters and teens to be more aggressive sexually and explains the rise in sexual behavior at the alarming ages found in our society today,"  Joseph Jannice from the Clean Water Project said.

What Williams suspects in terms of sexual activity is supported by one report.  Researchers in Boulder, Colorado made a startling discovery in their rivers and streams.  As it turns out male fish are developing female organs (see Fish Study).  Research associate John Woodling has been involved in studying the environment since  1973.  He said that he was frightened by current metamorphosis.  The strange fish have been found in three of Colorado's rivers downstream from sewage treatment plants.  The problem is too much estrogen in the water supply.  Denver's authorties report that the nation cannot remove all of the estrogen from the water supply.  There is also a problem with the influx of detergents and soaps, because they can mimic estrogen.  These estrogen mimickers (EM)are said by scientists and physicians to be possible causes of eye, kidney, liver and reproductive problems.  EM's are also produced by paint, rubber, cosmetics and plastics.  Europe has banned estrogen mimickers and Canada is now reviewing whether to ban them in that country.  EM's are found in 80% of America's streams it 30 states.  Dr. David O. Norris of the University of Colorado, Boulder stated that if people ingest the chemicals and absorb them that they would add to whatever normal hormones already present in the body.

It stands to reason that the same theory applies in reference to the other pharmaceuticals found in the US water supply.  The actual impact of the contaminated water in America can only be determined by future research. With the presence of prescription and over the counter drugs in the nation's water supply one has to be concerned about the long termed impact on humans.

As it turns out that old advice to flush unused drugs down the toilet is the reason why the water is contaminated.  Another reason is from people themselves.  The human body passes unabsorbed drugs through the system and it is flushed into the nation's water supply through the toilet.  Although the water is treated before it reaches the customer most treatment facilities do not or cannot remove all of the drug residue.

The EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) is taking notice.  They have surveyed 50 of America's largest cities. reviewed hundreds of reports and have analyzed the nation's water supply.  They also interviewed many officials and scientists.

In Philadelphia 56 drugs/drug bi products were found in the treated drinking water.  These drugs included pain medications, anti-infection drugs, cholesterol medications, asthma medications, epilepsy medications, heart medications and more.  There were 63 pharmaceuticals found in Philadelphia's watersheds.  San Francisco was found to have a sex hormone in the drinking water among other drugs.  Researchers found an anti-epileptic drug in Southern California's drinking water among other drugs. The nation's capital was not exempt from the problem.  Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas showed six pharmaceuticals in the drinking water.

Surprisingly, the United States of America does not require any testing for their drinking water.  Only 28 of the nation's 62 major water suppliers were tested by the federal government. America has yet to establish any set safety limits for drugs in the drinking water supply.
