All of these wonderful qualities were possessed by Faheem; and this is just our way of paying tribute to an intelligent young man whose life was unfortunately cut short. The recipients of this award will be selected by the school’s faculty members. Each student will receive a plaque, their picture in the local newspaper and a $250 gift certificate; which will be presented at the 2004 Commencement Ceremony.
In addition to this award we have also created the Deborah Smith “Guardian” Award in honor of the crossing guard who was injured during this tragic ordeal. Regardless of the weather conditions they are out there every single day putting their lives on the line to make sure our children get to and from school safely. This award will be given to the teacher who has gone over and beyond the call of duty, gone the extra mile to help a student succeed. A person who has touched a child in such a way, that it has positively affected his/her life. The recipient will also be selected by the faculty as well.
On March 6, 2004 Philly Native & The Porchia Bennett “Save the Children” Foundation will be having a fundraiser in North Philly (location & time TBA) in conjunction with the NACCP to help raise money to assist the family with the expenses that have accrued from the hospitalization and death of Faheem. We will also sponsor a youth fun day in North Philadelphia called the 1st Annual Faheem Thomas-Childs Community Block Party in the summer time.
Let’s not let this child’s death be in vain by not coming together as a community and turning this negative into a positive. If we don’t unite, we have nobody to blame but ourselves if another child loses their life over foolishness.
Let’s continue to Build the Village!!!!
