Health
Paid With A Price-How the EPA Conducted
Experiments On American Children

In the summer of
2004, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) began a study called
CHEERS in Duval county, Florida. Although the name sounds harmless
enough, it actually stood for Children's Environmental Exposure
Research Study. The program conducted studies on the effects of
pesticides and chemicals such as phthalates, brominated flame
retardant, perflourinated compounds in households that had at least one
child under the age of 13 months old.
The EPA recruited families into the program by
offering $975, a study t-shirt, a framed certificate of appreciation, a
calendar, a camcorder, a study news letter and a study bib for the
babies if they completed the two year study. Not surprisingly the
majority of the families targeted were minorities with a low level of
income. The families were told to spray pesticides and use chemicals
that the EPA stated to them as not posing any health risk in their
homes. A field officer would visit every 3-6 months for two years to
collect tests on how the children were doing before and after the use
of the pesticides, urine samples and food samples.
Of course the Environmental Protection Agency has
known for a long time that pesticides are harmful to the human body. On
their website (http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/food/pest.htm) they even
state that long time exposure to pesticides places people at risk to
developmental disorders, birth defects, and neurological problems.
Gladly, the program was brought to a halt in November of 2004 due to
public outrage. This is just an example of the many experiments that
have been conducted and are being conducted on the public. This is also
a perfect example of how we should always make ourselves aware because
quite frankly the government is not looking out for your best interest,
especially is they would harm American children.
Cheers Is No Joke-America Put
Our Children In Danger
I'm sure that the EPA would have finished conducting
its CHEERS program for the two-year time line if it hadn't been for the
public speaking out. Those young children may face all kinds of adverse
health problems due to the months of their exposure, but being exposed
to it for years would have been far worse. A lot of people feel
that speaking out on issues that are affecting our world and fellow
beings is just a waste of time, but in this case we see for a fact that
it is not. Let your voice be heard when you see a wrong being
committed. An act as simple as that could even save a life.

Senator Barbara D Boxer
and Florida Senator Bill Nelson on the CHEERS program.
